Thank you for your response to my request to Robert today. It is at least encouraging to see you acknowledge the need for QVMAG Policies to be readily accessible online.
It may be of some interest to you that prior making my request I did in fact Google “QVMAG Collection Policy” which did not take me anywhere promising (friendly?) and certainly not anywhere an online researcher would be likely to go to. By comparison I used a similar search technique for other institutions with good results.
I’ve just used the reference you’ve just given me and it takes me to a Council Agenda with all the attendant ‘bureaucratic dross’. Apart from being totally unfriendly it has no veracity at all unless you a willing to assume that Council passed it holus-bolus. Any self respecting researcher could not and I certainly couldn’t .... ever!
I do recall Tamara Clark taking on a similar task in the past and the inordinate time it took to effect any kind of outcome. So I take little or no comfort in this issue being resolved anytime soon despite your good intentions and aspirations.
This leaves yesterday’s request in regard to the deaccession, removal or disposal of collection items (accessioned or no) outstanding and I’m rather keen to receive this information.
I look forward to your advice.
Regards,
Ray

Dear Ray
Thank you for your email of 12 January 2016. The General Manager has referred your email to me to answer as it concerns access to QVMAG Policies.
I agree that policy documents that are approved by Council should be available to the public. QVMAG has a number of policies that are approved by Council.
The QVMAG Collection Policy, 07-Plx-011, is currently available on the City of Launceston website, and Council IT section is working to have the other QVMAG policies available on the website. I anticipate that this will be completed soon.
We have also been experiencing some problems with the QVMAG website. Tamara Clark returns to QVMAG as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator next Monday 18 January. We want to upgrade the website and it will include listing the Policies on it as well. This will be an immediate task for her.

Subject: QVMAG Policies
Good morning Robert,
It is my understanding that given that the QVMAG is a ‘public institution’ funded obstensivly by public monies – council rates plus State Govt. taxes and grants – its policies sets should be available to the public – those who fund the institution.
Importantly, QVMAG funding is largely raised via rates. By extension, this funding can be understood as ‘conscripted funds’ – funding collected under the threat of penalty.
Since the institution holds collections and material that can be understood as being a component of the ‘national estate’ these collections must/should be freely available to the ‘public’ and specifically researchers in all fields of endeavor covered by the collections.
Likewise, the policies guiding the institution’s collecting must/should available to contextualise collection activities and the overall operation. Indeed, on what basis were the collection acquisitions of 2015 made?
Typically such policies are available on cultural institutions’ websites. This is not so for the QVMAG. Currently I’m attempting to set up a kind of compare and contrast reference and it appears as if the QVMAG is placing itself outside the loop. Why might that be?
Can you please tell me IF placing this information on the QVMAG’s website is a prospect for anytime soon? IF so, when would you expect it to be realised? IF not, for what reason would they be regarded as confidential?
I look forward to your response in the very near future.
Regards,
Ray
