Re: AGAIN: A QVMAG Opportunity?

Good morning Richard,

I think you will have noted that my ‘research modus operandi’ is to share everything all the time with everyone ... and as  you remind me that I expect that of ‘public institutions’. However, I’m not operating alone with this project and ‘the committee’ cum working group have reminded me that there are “commercial implications that I need to be mindful of”. This is not something that drives me but it does others with ‘investments’ of various kinds in the project.

It is important, I think, to have your EoI and I’m glad that you think that the project may have legs. Yet, as I’ve said its early days. I’m sure that it’ll be possible to arrive at an ‘appropriate arrangement’ when the time comes .... and the funding is won. Currently we’re very much in work-in-progress mode.

As an aside, I would have thought that if the QVMAG was an enterprising/entrepreneurial institution/operation it would be regularly coming to ‘commercial arrangements’ with all kinds of businesses, enterprises, organisations, publishers, whatever. You may even recall me advocating a paradigm shift towards such an ‘institutional enterprise’ – as opposed to the Micawberish Cost Centre that the QVMAG operates as currently. So, I guess with my EXAMINERletter today I’m at least being consistent in that.

Whatever, I’ll keep you in the loop as ‘things’ unfold.

Regards,

Ray

Dear Ray

I am somewhat bemused by your request that the correspondence remains 'commercial in confidence'. Neither of your two previous emails regarding the Tamar Writer-In-Residence program had this stipulation.

As you remind us frequently, QVMAG is a public organisation and we cannot operate under such conditions. At this stage you have not fully articulated what the program would be so we are not sure what would in fact be in confidence.

Our expression of interest still stands as we think it is a good idea. However it cannot be more than this until we know what the program will entail and what is expected of QVMAG.

I suggested a meeting in the coming weeks with relevant QVMAG staff but your reply suggested more time was required.  In due course if we proceed we will develop an Agreement but until more information is forthcoming we will not take any further action.

Dear Richard and Robert,

Thank you for your positive response. It is good to have your Expression of Interest in a potential Tamar Writer-In-Residence program.

It is early days yet but when we get down to presenting an application some kind of agreement-in-principle would be useful. As I’ve already said, there would/should be no financial cost to the QVMAG unless the QVMAG were to commission work outside the residency. The purpose in the residency is to enable ‘the writer’ to be a free agent and unencumberedalbeit working towards identified outcomes.

Personally, I’m antithetic to BUREAUbabble and pointless humbug, so I’m ever likely to lose enthusiasm whenever its encountered and move on.

It is even possible that once you learn more of the project and our current ‘preferred candidate’, and the project brief, you may even wish to withdraw your support. I doubt it but nothing surprises me anymore. Some things just seem to have no bounds!

When there is something of substance to discuss relative to an application I/we shall get in touch. It may be that as the project develops other ‘players’ may become involved and I’m mindful of not getting ahead of where we need to be. Your E
oI right now is enough to be going on with.

Its good that you see an opportunity for the QVMAG and it would be good to realise it if at all possible.

Regards,

Ray

The General Manager, Robert Dobrzynski, has passed your email onto to me for advice as he would normally do with such requests.

QVMAG would be interested in participating in a Tamar Writer-In-Residence program. I will develop an Agreement so that it is clear what is expected of each party. QVMAG for instance is not in a position to provide any funds to the program but can provide 'in kind' support such as a work station and staffing access to the collection.

I would like to convene a meeting with you and any other member of your group to identify the key issues. I will also ask Martin George and Jon Addison from QVMAG to attend. We would need the contact details of your group. My PA is away today ill, but I will ask her to contact you and the others tomorrow to set a meeting time in the next few weeks.

I can see that the program has merit and I am pleased that QVMAG can assist. There are many positive possibilities and I look forward to discussing this with you further.

Subject: A QVMAG Opportunity?

Dear Robert,

In consideration of your
‘Christmas eMAIL’ to me entreating me to correspond with you directly instead of a Council staff member from the QVMAG I’m writing today in regard to an opportunity to locate a Tamar Writer-In-Residence at the QVMAG possibly towards the middle of 2016.

The group that I’m working with currently has a candidate in mind and its imagined that there would be benefits for the region and the institution.
  • What would the cost to the QVMAG be? .... Nil that is unless the QVMAG were to commission work outside the residency.
  • What would be expected of the QVMAG? ... Access to the collections and possibly access to some research cum office cum interview space/s
  • What involvement with QVMAG programming? ... Nil unless QVMAG initiated it and the ‘resident’ agreed.
  • What administrative role would the QVMAG play? ... Nil as the project would be auspiced by another body as of now.
  • What living accommodation might be required? ... Nil for the current candidate
  • What are the benefits to the QVMAG? .... To be determined by the QVMAG in consultation with the resident.

An expression of interest by week’s end would be useful and appreciated in the preparation of funding application/s

Regards,

Ray
