As promised here is today’s thread of correspondence and I’m both surprised and alarmed that, as a aldermen, you should not be aware of this concern in some way as a ‘live issue’. I take you at your word that you were not.
This is an extraordinary circumstance that calls upon people to act in ways that cannot be legislated for. Indeed, it calls upon us all to be measured and to measure the risks we perceive and behave accordingly.
Coming as I do from the Far Nth Coast of NSW I grew up with flood risk as a annual fact of life – sometimes several times a year. Over time I’ve watched risk management strategies evolve with some interest. Gladly, nowadays tragedy is rare in my home region yet sadly in Northern Tasmania we have seen tragedy strike in the current situation that we are in the midst of. How might this have been avoided?
Given the ‘expert advice’ available to council it should/might have been clear yesterday that tonight’s meeting’s was unwise at the very least – and as events unfolded potentially unsafe from a public safety perspective.
We seem to have a way to go yet, but hook-or-by-crook this meeting tonight had to happen on time as if nothing other than it’s timetable being met was of any importance at all. As I’m often told, I’m entitled to my opinion so I’ll leave you to make your own judgments.
Somewhat extraordinarily the GM called me at home shortly after 6pm to tell me that it was being proposed that the meeting be adjourned once it was opened at 7 pm. I found that bewildering and I still do.
I’m now wondering when political and bureaucratic process will ever give way to public safety concerns. Indeed, when will we ever see accountability as something more than a word to be mouthed on ‘appropriate occasions’.
Regards,
Ray

FYI
When people are being advised by the mayor not to travel unnecessarily (via his car phone in Pitt Av apparently) his advice does indeed seem to be very appropriate under the circumstances.
Moreover, conflicting advice seems to be emanating from ‘Town Hall’!

Ray

Hi Ray,
My previous email refers. As you would be aware access to the CBD is available and people are still traveling in and around the City. Even later this evening access will still be maintained through Tamar Street. Unless advice from emergency services warrant otherwise and I say again that this is not currently the case, then the public meeting will proceed as planned.
Regards
Robert

Dear Robert,
Irrespective of the correctness or otherwise of the information I’m receiving it is clear that is not advisable (safe?) for people to be out and about placing themselves at risk given the current circumstances.
Indeed, given the current circumstances I believe that it is an imperative that people be advised that the meeting is being postponed to a SAFER TIME!
I look forward to your advice.
Regards,
Ray

Mr Norman,
I understand that the current situation is that people may voluntarily evacuate from Invermay should they choose to do so to centres at Silverdome and UTAS at Newnham. Access is still readily available from the Invermay area and other suburbs into the CBD. Even if flood gates continue to be closed in response to circumstances that may change this evening, the Tamar Street gate will remain open. If circumstances warrant alternatives may be required. This is not currently the case.

Dear John,
A petitioner has just contacted me asking why tonight’s meeting was proceeding while there are radio announcements alerting people of the need to evacuate Invermay. Holding the meeting under these extreme circumstances potentially places people at risk in all kinds of ways – anticipatable and unanticipatable!
I therefore ask that people be advised of some new arrangement that poses less risk and that does not encourage people in any way to take risks for whatever reason. The situation we find ourselves in is, and on the evidence, an extremely dangerous and hazardous situation.
I look forward to your early advice.
Regards,
Ray

Dear Mr Norman
The General Manager has advised that the arrangements for the Public Meeting will proceed as advertised. The evacuation centre at Albert Hall was closed last night. Should further evacuation centres be required, the Silverdome and Newnham Campus of the University are on standby and will be utilised.

John

Dear John,
Since I’ve received no information to the contrary I am left to assume that tomorrow’s Public Meeting in Albert Hall has not being cancelled or postponed.
Given that the Albert Hall is, as I understand it, now an Emergency Centre as a consequence of flooding in the city it is hard to imagine how the meeting can in fact be held at least in that venue. Have alternative arrangements been made?
When is Council going to notify its constituency of its current plans for the Public Meeting? Indeed, when might I expect to be notified on behalf of the petitioners? Moreover, has the press been notified of any alternative plans?
I look forward to council’s urgent and early advice on this matter.
Regards,
Ray
